# Retire in Panama from the UK

> Panama's Pensionado Visa is widely regarded as the most generous retirement residency in the world. Just $1,000/month (~£790) of guaranteed lifetime pension qualifies — and the visa comes with statutory discounts of 25–50% on flights, restaurants, healthcare, utilities and entertainment. The USD economy means no currency surprises, and the Boquete highlands offer spring-like weather year-round.

## Key facts

- Pensionado: $1,000 USD/month (~£790) of guaranteed LIFETIME pension qualifies (+$250 per dependant) — permanent residency from day one
- Statutory discounts: 50% off entertainment, 25% off flights and restaurants, 20% off consultations, 15% off hospital bills, 25% off utilities
- Friendly Nations Visa overhauled 2021: now 2-year provisional residency requiring $200,000 CD, $200,000 property or qualifying employment
- UK State Pension letters must explicitly confirm 'permanent' / 'lifetime' status — many DB scheme letters need rewording
- USD economy — no GBP/local-currency conversion surprises

**UK State Pension in Panama: FROZEN.** Panama has no reciprocal agreement with the UK — the State Pension is frozen at the rate first paid. The full new State Pension is £241.30 a week (£12,548 a year, about £1,046 a month) for 2026/27. Once you are resident in Panama it stays at the weekly rate first paid to you there and does not rise with the April uprating.

## Monthly cost of living

## Retirement visa: Pensionado Visa

Apply via a Panamanian lawyer once in Panama with proof of guaranteed lifetime pension and clean record.

- **Minimum income:** about £800/month — the full new UK State Pension (£1,046/month) meets it on its own
- **Processing time:** 4–6 months total
- **Renewable:** Permanent residency — no renewal required
- **Difficulty:** 1/5 (1 = easiest)

**How to apply**

1. Enter Panama on a visa-waiver tourist stay
2. Engage a Panamanian immigration lawyer (mandatory)
3. Submit pension certificate (must show lifetime guarantee — UK State Pension qualifies)
4. Provide police certificate, health certificate and passport
5. Receive permanent residency card within 4–6 months

## Tax on your UK pension

- **Regime:** Territorial tax (foreign-source income exempt)
- **Rate on UK pension income:** Foreign-source pension income is not taxed in Panama — Panama uses a territorial tax system
- **UK double-tax treaty:** No DTT with the UK but irrelevant given territorial system

Most Pensionado retirees keep UK pension taxed in UK; Panama does not impose any additional tax on it.

## Healthcare

- **Public system:** Caja de Seguro Social (Panamanian public system) — most expats use private
- **UK S1 form accepted:** No — the S1 scheme does not apply here; budget for private cover
- **Private health insurance:** about £90/month
- **Healthcare score:** 4/5

Private healthcare from Panama City hospitals (Punta Pacífica, Hospital Nacional) is excellent and affordable. Pensionado discount on medical bills (15% on hospital services, 20% on consultations).

## Pros and cons

**Pros**

- Lowest pension threshold of any major retirement visa (~£800/month)
- Statutory discounts: 25–50% on flights, restaurants, healthcare, utilities
- USD economy — no currency conversion surprises
- Direct flights from London to Panama City

**Cons**

- Pensionado requires lifetime guaranteed pension (drawdowns don't qualify)
- Hot and humid year-round outside the highlands
- Smaller British community than Mexico or Costa Rica
- Mandatory immigration lawyer adds £2,500–4,000 to setup costs

## Where British retirees settle

- **Boquete** — Highland spring climate, expat haven. 1,200m altitude means 15–25°C year-round, large North American & European community, coffee farms. (about £1,200/month)
- **Panama City** — Cosmopolitan, full amenities. International airport, top private hospitals, Miami-style skyline, hot and humid. (about £1,500/month)
- **Coronado / Pacific coast** — Beach community, drive from capital. 1-hour drive from Panama City, established gated communities, beach lifestyle. (about £1,300/month)

Popular with British retirees: Boquete, Panama City, Coronado.

## FAQ

**Q: Does the UK State Pension qualify for Panama's Pensionado Visa?**
A: Yes — the UK State Pension is a guaranteed lifetime pension, which is exactly what Panama requires. As long as your monthly payment exceeds the $1,000 (~£790) threshold (the full new State Pension does), you qualify. Drawdown pensions from a SIPP generally don't qualify because they're not lifetime-guaranteed.

**Q: Does the UK State Pension uprate in Panama?**
A: No — Panama is a frozen-rate country. Whatever rate you start receiving when you become resident in Panama is the rate paid for as long as you stay.

**Q: What discounts does the Pensionado give me?**
A: Statutory discounts include 50% off entertainment, 25% off domestic and international flights with the Panamanian airline, 30% off public transport, 25% off restaurant bills, 20% off medical consultations, 15% off hospital fees, and 25% off utility bills above certain thresholds. All require showing the Pensionado card.

**Q: What changed with Panama's Friendly Nations Visa?**
A: Since 2021 it no longer grants instant permanent residency. UK citizens are still on the qualifying list of 50+ nations but must invest $200,000 in a Panamanian-bank CD or property, or hold qualifying local employment, for a 2-year provisional residency before PR.

**Q: Is the UK State Pension uprated in Panama?**
A: No. Panama is a frozen-rate country, so the pension paid into a Panamanian account stays at the rate first received once you are permanently resident.
