Methodology

Each country figure is the typical monthly outlay for a single retiree renting a 1-bedroom apartment in a popular British-retiree town (not a tourist hotspot, not a remote village). Included: rent, groceries from local supermarkets, basic utilities (electricity, water, internet), local public transport, modest healthcare (private cover or co-pays), and a leisure budget covering dining out twice a week and occasional travel.

Not included: one-off setup costs (visa fees, property deposit, moving costs), travel back to the UK, or premium upgrades like a swimming pool or live-in help. The UK baseline (£2,300) reflects an Office for National Statistics-based estimate for a retired single household renting outside London. Foreign-currency figures are converted at indicative rates fixed at each review.

People also ask

What is the cheapest country to retire to from the UK in 2026?

Among the 12 destinations we cover, Turkey is the cheapest from around £900/month for a comfortable life on the Mediterranean coast, followed by Thailand (~£1,100), Mexico (~£1,100), Panama (~£1,300), Greece (~£1,300) and Cyprus (~£1,450). The full new UK State Pension alone (~£997/month, 2025/26) covers a basic life in Turkey, Thailand and rural Portugal.

Can I live on the UK State Pension alone abroad?

Yes, in some countries. The full new State Pension of about £997/month in 2025/26 covers a modest lifestyle in Turkey, Thailand, rural Portugal, the Greek islands and inland Panama. It is not enough for Spain's coast, France or Italy on its own — you'll need additional private or workplace pension income.

How much income do I need to retire in Spain from the UK?

Spain's Non-Lucrative Visa requires €28,800/year (£24,400) for the main applicant in 2026, plus €7,200 per dependant — under Real Decreto 557/2011 Art. 47, which uses 400% of the IPREM index. Day-to-day cost of living for a single retiree on the Costa Blanca is £1,500/month; the Costa del Sol is closer to £1,700.

Where does the UK State Pension stretch furthest?

Turkey, Thailand, rural Portugal, the Greek islands and inland Mexico — all places where £1,000/month buys a comfortable single retiree life. Note that in Turkey, Thailand, Mexico, Panama and Costa Rica the pension is FROZEN at the rate first paid, so factor in the loss of annual uprating over a 20-year retirement.
